멜로니 이탈리아 총리와 뉴욕에서 취임 후 처음으로 정상회담을 진행했습니다.

멜로니 총리는 K-pop의 열렬한 팬인 딸 이야기를 하며 한국문화가 전 세계적으로 큰 인기를 얻고 있다고 전했습니다. 앞으로 양국 간 문화교류를 강화하고 활성화하는 데 협력하기로 뜻을 모았습니다.

전략적 동반자 관계인 양국 정부와 기업이 AI, 방산 등 분야에서 호혜적 협력을 한층 심화시키자고 제안했으며, 멜로니 총리는 조만간 방한해 구체적인 협력 방안을 모색하길 희망한다고 밝혔습니다.

국제사회가 직면한 위기에 관한 이야기를 나누던 중 멜로니 총리는 위기(crisis)라는 단어의 그리스어 어원이 '결정'을 뜻한다고 설명했습니다. 이어 ‘위기는 기회’라는 격언을 바탕으로 한국과 이탈리아가 위기를 기회로 만들기 위해 긴밀히 협력해 나가자고 답했습니다.

I held my first summit with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italian Republic since my inauguration, in New York.

Prime Minister Meloni shared a story about her daughter, an ardent fan of K-pop, noting that Korean culture is enjoying great popularity around the world. We agreed to work together to further strengthen and promote cultural exchanges between our two countries.

I proposed that our governments and businesses, as strategic partners, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in areas such as AI and defense industry. Prime Minister Meloni expressed her hope to visit Korea in the near future to explore concrete avenues of cooperation.

In our discussion on the crises facing the international community, Prime Minister Meloni explained that the Greek origin of the word “crisis” means “decision.” Building on the adage that “a crisis is an opportunity,” I responded that Korea and Italy should work closely together to turn crises into opportunities.
