REMARKS
BY H.E. GONG RO-MYUNG
AT
A DINNER
IN CELEBRATION OF THE FIRST ASIAN JOURNALISTS' SEMINAR

September 19, 1996  Seoul

Distinguished Asian Journalists,

I would like to congratulate all participants on the successful launching of the First Asian Journalists'
Seminar sponsored by the Joong-Ang Ilbo. It's a pleasure for me to welcome all of you to dinner this evening.

I understand you had a very fruitful seminar today and exchanged views and opinions on duties and goals of
the press, which plays a most important role, especially in this time of rapid transition.

It goes without saying that a community or a state can make sound and solid progress only when the press
fulfills its function.

Now, the press not only exerts an influence on local situations but goes far toward overcoming differences in
thoughts and ideas by fostering mutual understanding and exchange across boundaries. In this respect, it is
important for Asian journalists to get together.

The 21st Century will be an Asia-Pacific era, and the inter-regional role of Asian countries is drawing a great
deal of attention. On the eve of the 21st Century, the situation on the Korean Peninsula can be defined as
that of dynamism, and uncertainty.

I hope you fully avail yourselves of this opportunity to gain a better understanding of the situation on the
Korean Peninsula and South-North relations.

As you are well informed, last Tuesday a North Korean submarine infiltrated into the territory of South Korea.
This dangerous behavior is a sheer proof that they have not yet given up their intention to communize South
Korea. This is a clear example proving how irrational the regime in North Korea is.

Now I would like to wish you a pleasant remainder of your stay in Seoul. I hope it continues to be meaningful
and valuable.

Distinguished Guests,

I would like to propose a toast to your health and to a bright future for the Asian press.

Thank you.
