Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Relations Noh Kyu-duk

June 12, 2018  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

I am glad that the US-North Korea summit, which the whole world was looking forward to, took place today.

We hope that the US-North Korea summit, which came after the two inter-Korean summits, will become a historic milestone in efforts to achieve complete denuclearization and establish a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Even after the US-North Korea summit, the government of the Republic of Korea will maintain watertight cooperation with the US, and continue diplomatic efforts to make tangible progress in resolving the North Korean nuclear issue.

As part of such efforts, after the US-North Korea summit, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono will visit the ROK, and meet with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha to share the results of the US-North Korea summit, and engage in in-depth discussions on the way forward.

First, on the morning of June 14, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha will meet bilaterally with her US counterpart Pompeo, who will visit the ROK from June 13 to 14.

Minister Kang and Secretary Pompeo will discuss the results of the US-North Korea summit, and closely consult on ways the ROK and the US can work together to achieve complete denuclearization and establish peace on the Korean Peninsula.

On the morning of June 14, Minister Kang will also meet jointly with Secretary Pompeo and Minister Kono, and hold a joint press conference.

After the meeting, Minister Kang will have a luncheon meeting with Minister Kono, and exchange views on issues of mutual interest, including issues on the Korean Peninsula, and the way forward for the ROK-Japan relations.

This is all for my opening statement. I will now take your questions.

As there are no questions, I will conclude today’s briefing. Thank you.
