4th Meeting of ROK-U.S. Nuclear Security Working Group Takes Place

1. The Republic of Korea and the United States held the 4th meeting of the Nuclear Security Working Group of the ROK-U.S. High Level Bilateral Commission in a virtual format on the morning of September 23. In the meeting, the two countries reviewed current status regarding bilateral cooperation in nuclear security and discussed future ways to work together in the area.

 

o The Nuclear Security Working Group is one of the four working groups established under the High Level Bilateral Commission, which was launched pursuant to the revised ROK-U.S. nuclear cooperation agreement in 2015. It is co-chaired by Director-General for Nonproliferation and Nuclear Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Park Il and Director for Nuclear Threat Reduction and Counterterrorism of the U.S. National Security Council (NSC) Leah Cochran.

 

o The 4th meeting of the Working Group was attended by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control, and the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety from the ROK side, as well as officials of the Department of State, the Department of Energy/the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Department of Defense, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission from the U.S. side.

 

2. The ROK and the U.S., as the troika of the Nuclear Security Summit and partners that have shown leadership in strengthening the global nuclear security regime, have been leading the international community particularly in the areas of Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) Minimization, enhancing cyber security in the nuclear related facilities, and bolstering the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s nuclear security activities
