Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Taeho attended the Sudan Partnership Conference, held in the form of a video conference for about 3 hours from 22:00, June 25 (KST), and said that the government of the Republic of Korea supports the efforts of the Transitional Government of Sudan towards democratization and economic reforms, and will continue to support Sudan’s development, including through humanitarian assistance and development cooperation.

o The Conference, co-hosted by the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Nations, the European Union, and the Republic of the Sudan, was held to muster the international community’s will for solidarity in support of Sudan’s political and economic reform efforts. The Conference brought together ministerial-level officials from about 50 countries and international organizations, including Sudan's Prime Minister Hamdok, UN Secretary-General Guterres, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy, and Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Maas.

2. Vice Minister Lee said that the ROK, as a country that has simultaneously achieved democratization and economic development for a short period of time, shares the political and economic aspirations of the Sudanese people, and that drawing on its experience, the ROK will support the establishment of a stable political system and the reform of the economic structure that the Transitional Government of Sudan is focusing on.

3. In addition, Vice Minister Lee announced that the ROK government will offer assistance worth 7.5 million U.S. dollars this year to support Sudan’s COVID-19 response and social and economic development.

o He added that the ROK, noting the potential of Sudan with vast arable land, young workforce, and rich natural resources, has been contributing to Sudan’s sustainable development by conducting development cooperation projects in a range of areas, including agriculture and vocational training.

4. The participants decided to announce a Joint Communiqué in which they express the international support for Sudan’s political and economic reform efforts, offer assistance for Sudan’s COVID-19 response, and pledge financial contributions to support Sudan’s economic reforms.

5. The ROK government has publicly supported Sudan’s efforts towards democratization in the spirit of preserving peace and democracy. At the Conference, the government announced to the international community more concrete ways to support Sudan, including humanitarian assistance and development cooperation projects.
