1. On 12 May 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conducted a teleconference on ‘ROK-UAE Nuclear Cooperation’, presided over by the Leads of the Working Group of the ROK-UAE High-Level Consultation on Nuclear Cooperation to discuss the ongoing cooperation and future plans for bilateral nuclear cooperation, one of the core pillars of the ‘special strategic partnership’ between the two countries.

* The new Lead of the Working Group for the Republic of Korea is Park Il, Director-General for Nonproliferation and Nuclear Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the UAE Lead is Mr. Nasser Al-Nasseri, Chief Executive Officer of the Barakah One Company, the financial and commercial subsidiary of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation.

** The Consultation on Nuclear Cooperation was established in 2018 to discuss various matters regarding bilateral nuclear cooperation and was held twice in November 2018 (Seoul) and in November 2019 (Abu Dhabi). The Consultation is headed by the 2^nd Vice Foreign Minister of the ROK and the UAE Minister of Energy & Industry.

2. Both sides agreed in principle to have <The 3^rd ROK-UAE High-Level Consultation on Nuclear Cooperation> in Korea at a mutually convenient time and safe to do so later this year. Both sides are in agreement to closely consult and follow-up concrete measures to implement the agreements reached for each of the three Working Groups: Construction of NPPs and Overseas Nuclear Projects, Nuclear Science and Technology R&D, and Nuclear Safety, Regulation and Security.

3. Today’s teleconference is deemed to be as an opportunity to discuss and oversee the bilateral nuclear cooperation, which is one of the cornerstones of the ROK-UAE’s special strategic partnership.
