1. Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Kim Gunn had a meeting and a working luncheon with Mr. Soe Han, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the morning of February 5, 2020, and discussed the bilateral relations, ASEAN-ROK cooperation and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

2. Deputy Minister Kim expressed pleasure over the fact that the meeting and the luncheon with the Permanent Secretary had helped continue the momentum of bilateral high-level exchanges, while the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries had been strengthened since the ROK President’s state visit to Myanmar in September 2019 and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit to the ROK for the ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit in November 2019.

3. Deputy Minister Kim and Permanent Secretary Soe Han welcomed the fact that, in the first half of 2019, the number of Korean visitors to Myanmar had grown more than 80% compared to the first half of 2018 since the Myanmarese government had started to grant visa waivers to Koreans. On that note, they voiced hope that the people to people exchange will be boosted by the Myanmar Airways International’s launch of direct flights between the two countries.

4. Deputy Minister Kim and Permanent Secretary Soe Han shared the view that the substantive cooperation between the two countries has a great potential for further enhancement, and agreed to work closely together for smooth progress in the projects agreed upon by the two leaders during President Moon’s state visit to Myanmar, including the establishment of a Korea Desk, the creation of a Korea-Myanmar Industrial Complex, and the development of Dala Township.

5. Deputy Minister Kim and Permanent Secretary Soe Han, taking note of the successful results of the ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit and the 1st Mekong-Republic of KOREA Summit held in late November 2019, agreed to continue cooperation at the ASEAN-ROK and Mekong-ROK senior officials’ meetings in 2020.

6. Deputy Minister Kim extended appreciation to the Myanmarese side for its support for the peace process on the Korean Peninsula. Permanent Secretary Soe Han responded by mentioning that the Myanmarese government will continue to actively support the ROK government’s efforts toward complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
