Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs to Visit U.S. for Consultation between ROK and U.S. Chief Negotiators for North Korean Nuclear Issue

1. Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, will visit Washington D.C., the United States (U.S.), on January 15-18 and have a meeting with Mr. Stephen Biegun, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea.

○ The two chief negotiators will share assessments of the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and discuss ways to work together in achieving substantial progress toward complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.

※ The two chief negotiators had a telephone conversation on January 1, after the release of Rodong Sinmun’s report on the Fifth Plenary Session of the Seventh Workers' Party of the Korea Central Committee.


○ During his visit to the U.S., Amb. Lee will also meet with other officials of the U.S. administration and, at the invitation of Deputy Secretary Biegun, attend his swearing-in ceremony scheduled for January 17.
