1. Hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sponsored by the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters), Jeollabuk-do and Muju-gun, the Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo World Championship will be held at Taekwondowon, Muju, Jeollabuk-do, on Wednesday, November 13.

About 100 players (44 coaches) from 43 countries including winners of Taekwondo contests hosted by overseas diplomatic missions of the Republic of Korea (ROK) will join the championship, during which the winners in the fields of Gyeorugi (translated as “a technique of sparring”) and Poomsae (translated as “patterns of defense-and-attack motions”) will be selected.

2. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has endeavored to establish the sport event as the representative project of sports public diplomacy such as holding the Taekwondo championship hosted by overseas diplomatic missions for Taekwondo trainees in foreign countries since 2014, inviting the winners of the contests to the ROK and holding world finals since 2017.

3. In particular, this event will take place in Muju, Jeollabuk-do, with the aim of supporting provincial governments to further develop their public diplomacy capacities, and provide a platform for public diplomacy by inviting the diplomatic corps from 26 countries, including ambassadors from the participating countries.

4. During the event, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold a variety of events, so the visitors can appreciate the real value of the ROK as the origin of Taekwondo, such as a Taekwondo class instructed by Master Jung Kook-hyun, a gold medalist in the Seoul 1988 Summer Olympics (Secretary-General of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation), training with Korean college students majoring Taekwondo and watching performances of the Woosuk University Taekwondo performance team.

In addition, historical and cultural tour programs will be held in some places in Seoul during their six-day visit to the ROK.

5. The championship is expected to serve as an opportunity to help promote Taekwondo, the Korean traditional martial art, and to establish cultural public diplomacy that promotes more diverse cultures and attractive features of Korea to the participants who came to know about Korea through Taekwondo.
