4th ROK-U.S. Senior Economic Dialogue to Take Place

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the Department of State of the United States (U.S.), plans to hold the 4th Republic of Korea-United States Senior Economic Dialogue in Seoul on November 6 to discuss ways to increase and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.


° The Dialogue is a vice minister-level channel for economic diplomacy and consultation between the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Department of State established pursuant to the agreement reached between the Presidents of the two countries during their summit in October 2015. Its first, second and third meetings were held in November 2015, January 2017 and December 2018, respectively.

° The forthcoming Dialogue, to which the heads of the ROK and U.S. delegations will be Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Taeho and Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Keith Krach, will cover bilateral economic relations between the two countries, the connectivity between the New Southern Policy and the Indo-Pacific Strategy in the areas of development and energy, and ways to enhance cooperation on global issues, including environment, healthcare and women’s economic empowerment.


2. In conjunction with the Senior Economic Dialogue, “the 3rd ROK-U.S. Joint Public-Private Economic Forum” will take place at Hotel Shilla on November 7, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the U.S. Department of State and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP).


° The Forum was set up during the ROK-U.S. summit in June 2017 to promote economic opportunities between the two countries. The 1st Forum was held in October 2017, followed by the 2nd in December 2018.

 

° The forthcoming Forum will kick off with opening remarks by Vice Minister Lee Taeho and a keynote speech by Under Secretary Krach, and cover “Review of ROK-U.S. Economic Relations” in Session 1, “ROK-U.S. Partnership in the ASEAN region” in Session 2, and “Global Cooperation Issues: Women’s Economic Empowerment” in Session 3.


3. At the upcoming Senior Economic Dialogue and Joint Public-Private Economic Forum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to review the progress in cooperation between the governments and between the private sectors of the ROK and the U.S., continue to identify agenda for future-oriented economic cooperation, and discuss ways to further consolidate bilateral cooperation on global issues.
