Outcome of 8th Session of Assembly and 12th Session of Council of GGGI

1. The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) held the 8th Session of the Assembly and the 12th Session of the Council (joint session) in Seoul on October 24.

 

° The session was chaired by Mr. Ban Ki-moon, President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council, and attended by about 100 people -- government delegates of 36 member countries, including the Republic of Korea (ROK’s head delegate: Ambassador for Climate Change Yoo Yeon-chul), and observer countries.

 

° At the session, along with other issues discussed, new member countries were welcomed, the Strategy 2030 was adopted, matters related to the operations and the budget were reported, and new Council members were elected

 

2. Over the seven years since its establishment as an international organization in 2012, GGGI’s member countries increased to 36. GGGI is growing into a major international organization that spearheads global issues such as green growth, climate change, and sustainable development.

 

3. At the Assembly and Council, the ROK government announced its plan to host the 2nd P4G (Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030) Summit in 2020, and asked for the attention and participation of the member countries.

 

° With the year 2020 marking the 10th anniversary of the establishment of GGGI, the ROK government will continue to explore ways to cooperate with GGGI, including holding side events in conjunction with the P4G Summit.

 

4. During the Global Green Growth Week (GGGW) 2019 held from October 21 to 25, the “Global Policy Dialogue on Climate Governance” took place on October 23, co-hosted by GGGI and Stimson Center, a think tank in the United States, with the support of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the ROK and Japan and discussed such global issues as ways to reform climate governance. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of GGGI, delivered a keynote speech, and Mr. Chung Keeyong, Director-General for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Scientific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, served as the moderator.

 

° At the Dialogue, the ROK introduced its plan to host the 2nd P4G Summit in 2020 and asked for the attention of global leaders and experts.

 

5. The ROK government, as a Council member, Vice Chair, host of the GGGI headquarters and largest donor to the organization, will continue to work with GGGI in order for it to foster green growth in developing countries through more substantial country programs and to develop into an organization that leads the international community’s discussions on green growth.
