Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Host North-East Asia Regional Power Interconnection and Cooperation Forum 2019

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific - East and North-East Asia Office (UNESCAP-ENEA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Korea Electric Power Corporation, will host the “North-East Asia Regional Power Interconnection and Cooperation Forum 2019” at COEX, Seoul, on October 24.

 

° The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will host the aforementioned Forum back to back with the Korea-International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Renewable Energy Cooperation Seminar held on October 22 on the occasion of the 8th International Renewable Energy Conference (KIREC Seoul 2019) on October 23-25. By doing so, the Ministry is expected to contribute to broadening the Republic of Korea’s horizon for energy cooperation diplomacy.

 

2. The forthcoming Forum will feature keynote speeches by Minister of Energy of Mongolia Tserenpil Davaasuren, Director-General of IRENA Francesco La Camera, and Chair of the Executive Board of the Renewable Energy Institute (REI) Tomas Kaberger, followed by expert presentations and discussions on “review of progress and planned activities on cooperation for power interconnection” in Session 1, “ADB-Northeast Asia Power System Interconnection (NAPSI) project outcomes and recommendations” in Session 2, and “ways forward – in support of intergovernmental cooperation and arrangement” in Session 3.

 

3. Mr. Chung Kee-yong, Director-General for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Scientific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mentioned that regional power interconnection in Northeast Asia is a significant initiative in that it contributes to economic cooperation, responding jointly to climate change, and peace and stability in the region. He expressed hope that the upcoming Forum would help move forward cooperation among Northeast Asian countries toward future power interconnection in the region.
