Outcome of ROK-Japan Director-General-Level Meeting on Aug. 29

1. Mr. Kim Jung-han, Director-General for Asian and Pacific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had a meeting with Mr. Kenji Kanasugi, Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan who visited the Republic of Korea (ROK) on the afternoon of August 29. During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, including the issue concerning the victims of forced labor during Japan’s occupation of Korea.


2. Director-General Kim conveyed deep regret and protest over the Japanese government’s official removal of the ROK from its Whitelist on August 28, and once again called for an immediate withdrawal of the measure.

° The Director-General stressed that as a way to resolve the issue, in particular, unconditional and sincere dialogue should take place between the export control authorities as soon as possible, and demanded cooperation of the Japanese side.

3. Director-General Kim once again conveyed the grave view of the government and the people of the ROK with regard to the disposal of the contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. On that note, he pointed out the need for the Japanese government to share with the ROK government detailed information, including accurate facts and planned measures, as often as possible.


4. The two sides, sharing the understanding that communication should continue between the diplomatic authorities, agreed to keep holding relevant consultations.
