Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Tae-ho Meets with Deputy Executive Director of UN Women Åsa Regnér

1. On the afternoon of July 1, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs met with Ms. Åsa Regnér, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) who is on a visit to the Republic of Korea. In the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on ways to step up cooperation between the ROK and UN Women.

 

2. Vice Minister Lee commended UN Women for continuing efforts to enhance its effectiveness and efficiency and to strengthen its function of coordinating work on gender equality within the UN system pursuant to the Strategic Plan 2018–2021 adopted in 2017. Mentioning that the ROK government will continue to assist UN Women’s activities, the Vice Minister voiced hope that the ROK-UN Women cooperation will strengthen further.

 

3. Deputy Executive Director of UN Women Regnér extended appreciation to the ROK for inviting her to the 1st International Conference on “Action with Women and Peace” as well as for supporting UN Women’s activities as a member state of the UN-Women Executive Board since the launch of UN Women. She requested that the ROK, which has achieved much progress on gender equality and women’s human rights, continue to support the developing countries’ efforts toward progress in these areas.

 

4. The meeting with Deputy Executive Director Regnér, which took place during her visit to the ROK for the 1st International Conference on “Action with Women and Peace,” is seen to have served as an opportunity for the two sides to exchange views on UN Women’s work direction on gender equality and women’s empowerment; and to reaffirm the commitment of the ROK and UN Women to continue bilateral cooperation.
