1. The Republic of Korea was elected a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2020-2022 term at the elections held at the UN General Assembly on June 14.

° This marks the ROK’s fifth consecutive election to the Council since 2008.

° ECOSOC consists of 54, three-year-term members. It elected 18 new members on June 14.

2.  ECOSOC fosters UN discussions on economic, social, cultural, educational, health, and related matters of the international community. ECOSOC, along with the UN Security Council and Human Rights Council, plays a pivotal role in the efforts to achieve the UN’s three pillars -- peace and security, human rights, and development.

° In particular, ECOSOC leads discussions on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the common tasks of the international community; oversees the work of more than 20 subsidiary bodies, including the UN Statistical Commission; and elects Council members of the UN Development Programme, the World Food Programme and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), among others.

3. As a re-elected member of ECOSOC, the ROK will continue to contribute to the UN and the international community in the areas of economy, social affairs and development.
