Outcomes of 6th ROK-US Energy Security Dialogue and Track 1.5 Roundtable on ROK-US Energy Cooperation

1. The Republic of Korea Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United States Department of State held the “6th ROK-US Energy Security Dialogue” in Jeju on June 1.

 

The delegations of the ROK and the US were led by Kwon Sei-joong, Director-General for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Scientific Affairs of the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Melissa Simpson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Energy Resources of the US Department of State, respectively.

 

o Kwon Sei-joong, Director-General for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Scientific Affairs of the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who led the ROK delegation to the meeting, noted that energy cooperation between the ROK and the US is an area that can bring benefits to both sides, as it can help the ROK diversify reliable sources of energy, and help the US expand its export market for energy as well as contribute to strengthening its allies’ energy security.

 

o In addition, the two sides agreed to continue close cooperation between the ROK and the US to enhance energy security and develop the energy industry in a mutually-beneficial manner. They also agreed to continue to work to find possible areas of cooperation, including cybersecurity in the energy sector.

 

2. The “Track 1.5 Roundtable on the ROK-US Energy Cooperation” joined by energy experts from the private sector of the two countries was held for the first time on May 31 back-to-back with the 6th ROK-US Energy Security Dialogue.

 

o The public-private Roundtable has been organized partly as an open program of the “14th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity,” which was held at the International Convention Center Jeju from May 29 to 31. At the Roundtable, the participants introduced the two countries’ energy policies, and discussed ways to increase energy cooperation as well as the geopolitical aspect of energy and cooperation between the ROK and the US in third countries.

 

o Energy experts from the two sides said that the ROK, highly dependent on energy imports, thinks highly of the emergence of the US as a global energy provider on the basis of the Shale Revolution, and underlined the need to continue to deepen energy cooperation between the two countries.
