1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha met with Kyaw Tint Swe, Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of May 27. In the meeting, the two sides discussed the following: ways to promote the relations between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar as well as cooperation between the ROK and ASEAN; and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

※ Union Minister Kyaw Tint Swe is on a visit to the ROK to attend the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity to take place from May 29 to 31.

2. Minister Kang took note of the substantial advances in friendly and cooperative ties between the two countries across the board since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975; and expressed hope to step up cooperation with Myanmar, a key cooperative partner for the ROK’s New Southern Policy.

° Union Minister Kyaw Tint Swe, highlighting the lately ongoing efforts of the Myanmarese government to provide a better investment environment for foreign investors, voiced hope that Korean enterprises will boost their investment in Myanmar in line with the New Southern Policy.

3. Minister Kang explained the ROK’s government-wide efforts to successfully hold the 2019 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit and the inaugural Mekong-ROK Summit in November 2019, asking for continued cooperation of the Myanmarese government in that regard.

° Union Minister Kyaw Tint Swe welcomed the upcoming events; explained that State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi will attend them; and expressed hope that the events will help further vitalize high-level exchanges between the ROK and Myanmar.

4. In addition, Minister Kang explained the ROK government’s efforts to achieve complete denuclearization and to build a permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula; expressed appreciation to both Myanmar and ASEAN for their support for those efforts; and asked the Myanmarese government to continue to extend active cooperation.
