Foreign Minister to Attend Davos Forum 2019

1. At the invitation of Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Klaus Schwab, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha will attend on January 23-25 the 2019 round of the WEF Annual Meeting, --the Davos Forum -- which will take place in Davos, the Swiss Confederation.

 

° The Davos Forum 2019, which will take place from January 22 till 25 under the theme of “Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” will consist of a total of about 400 open and closed-door sessions, where some 3,000 people will exchange views on various global issues, including ripple effects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and ways to respond to it, geopolitics, digital affairs and technology, and cyber security.

 

The forthcoming Davos Forum will bring together about 100 top-level delegates from governments and international organizations, including Prime Minister of Japan Abe and Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Merkel; some 1,700 entrepreneurs; and about 1,000 people from media outlets, academic circles and civic groups.

 

2. On January 23, Minister Kang, together with the Foreign Minister of Japan, the Foreign Minister of Canada and the Finance Minister of the Republic of Singapore, will attend as a discussant “the geopolitical outlook” session to be moderated by WEF President Børge Brende, where she will present her views on geopolitical issues that could have impact on the global economy and industries in 2019.

 

3. On January 24, Minister Kang will attend a closed-door working luncheon for world economic leaders and a working dinner for top-level and other major government officials, during which she will exchange views with other participants on key issues, including the future of global governance and climate change.

 

4. On January 25, Minister Kang will take part as a panelist in a closed-door meeting on Korean Peninsula issues, during which she will share and exchange in-depth views with other participants on the efforts of the government of the Republic of Korea to move forward the peace process on the Korean Peninsula aimed at the denuclearization and the establishment of a permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.

 

5. On January 23, Minister Kang will host a networking dinner under the theme of “a peaceful and prosperous Korean Peninsula” for entrepreneurs, journalists, scholars and other major figures as well as delegates from international organizations, who will be attending the Forum.

 

° At the event, the Minister will explain the ROK government’s foreign policy designed for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and the government’s role in efforts to foster an innovation-friendly international economic environment; and exchange views and engage in networking with participants.

 

6. On the occasion of the Davos Forum 2019, Minister Kang will meet bilaterally with her counterparts from Japan, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Canada, the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Republic of Iraq.

 

7. At the forthcoming Davos Forum, Minister Kang will share with opinion leaders of the global community the ROK government’s diplomatic efforts to achieve denuclearization and establish a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. Accordingly, the event is expected to serve as a good opportunity to win broader support from the international community.
