Special Travel Advisory Issued for Areas in Western Uganda at High Risk of Ebola Spread

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to raise the travel-alert level for areas within 50 kilometers from the Republic of Uganda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the special travel advisory, which is tantamount to Red Alert (travel-alert Level 3, Travel Restricted), from the previous Yellow Alert (travel-alert Level 2, Highly Cautious), effective from November 21, 2018.

o The special travel advisory will be issued temporarily until the Ebola outbreak is contained, considering the large movement of people from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where many confirmed cases of Ebola have been reported, to western Uganda, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO)’s decision to classify Uganda as a country at high risk of spread of Ebola virus disease.

2. As the special travel advisory has been issued, the nationals of the Republic of Korea staying in western Uganda are advised to leave the area unless there are urgent matters to attend to. Those planning to travel to the region are advised to cancel or postpone their trip.

3. The Foreign Ministry will continue to review whether to further adjust the travel-alert level for the areas, closely monitoring the public health situation in countries at risk of an Ebola outbreak, including Uganda.
