“Gwanghwamun Africa Café” to Take Place (October 17~November 7)

1. The “Gwanghwamun Africa Café,” hosted by the Korea-Africa Foundation (launched in June 2018) and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Center for Diplomacy with the People to conduct diplomacy towards Africa together with the people, will be held four times for one month from October 17 at the Center for Diplomacy with the People on the first floor of the Foreign Ministry building.

 

2. The Gwanghwamun Africa Café takes place to clear up prejudices and misunderstandings about Africa, and to provide people with an opportunity to correctly understand Africa, emerging as a future growth engine, as well as to listen to the different opinions of the Korean people about diplomacy towards Africa.

 

o At the first Gwanghwamun Africa Café, to be hosted by Yonhap News Agency reporter Kim Soo-jin for one hour from 7 p.m., October 17, Director-General for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hong Jin-wook, television personality Sam Okyere, and founder of Africa Insight Heo Sung-yong will talk about the theme “looking at the African continent without prejudice.” (A question-and-answer session with ordinary participants will take place.)

 

o The “Gwanghwamun Africa Café” will be broadcast live on the Facebook pages of the Korea-Africa Foundation and the Center for Diplomacy with the People.

3. The Foreign Ministry will continue to hold a range of events where the Korean people and companies can participate to increase the people’s participation in diplomacy towards Africa following the launch of the Korea-Africa Foundation in June this year.

 

o The “2018 Seoul Dialogue on Africa” will take place in Seoul (Lotte Hotel) on December 5, 2018.

 

- The meeting will be co-hosted by the Foreign Ministry and the Korea-Africa Foundation to raise awareness of Africa at home and strengthen expertise on the region; to gather policy proposals to establish an ROK-Africa strategic partnership; and to facilitate research into Africa in the ROK, and strengthen networks among researchers on Africa.
