ROK-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Held on Sidelines of ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings

1. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, who is on a visit to Singapore to attend ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings, met bilaterally with her Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland on August 4.

 

Engagements between the ROK and Canadian Foreign Ministers this year: bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Vancouver Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Security and Stability on the Korean Peninsula (January 15), and the UN Human Rights Council meeting (February 27), as well as during Minister Freeland’s visit to the ROK (March 29) / phone conversation (July 6)

 

2. Minister Kang took note of Canada’s consistent support for the ROK government’s policy to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and to establish a lasting peace regime on the Peninsula, and asked for Canada’s continued interest and constructive contributions regarding issues on the Korean Peninsula.

 

o Minister Freeland said that Canada would provide active cooperation in areas where the country can make contributions in order to peacefully resolve issues on the Korean Peninsula.

 

3. The two Ministers exchanged views on regional situations, global economic and trade trends, and cooperation on global issues. Minister Freeland especially said that Canada had a keen interest in advancing international discussions on women’s empowerment, and invited Minister Kang to attend a meeting of women foreign ministers, to be held in Canada in September this year.

 

o Minister Kang spoke highly of the Canadian side’s efforts to promote gender equality, and said that she would positively consider attending the meeting.

 

Meeting of women foreign ministers (September 21-22, Montreal, Canada)

 

- It will be co-hosted by Canadian Foreign Minister Freeland, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Mogherini.

- It aims to look at challenges facing the world from the gender perspective, and discuss ways to utilize the expertise of women leaders.
