1. With regard to the accident involving the Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy hydropower dam in the Lao province of Attapeu on July 23, after the meeting of “the private-public joint council for overseas emergency relief” on July 25 and close consultations with the Lao government, the Republic of Korea government has decided to send to Loas on July 29 a Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT), composed of medical personnel, on the ROK’s military transport aircraft.

° The KDRT, comprised of 15 medical workers and 5 assistants, plans to carry out work to prevent residents in affected areas from contracting infectious diseases and to provide them with medical treatment.

2. In addition, the ROK government has decided to offer Laos $1 mln in humanitarian assistance -- $500,000 in cash and another $500,000 in supplies.

° The first batch of supplies, mainly including blankets, sanitation kits and other daily necessities, together with relief supplies from SK Engineering & Construction Co., the Korean Red Cross and other private sectors, will be transported to Laos by the ROK’s military transport aircraft on July 28.

° The government, having decided to provide Laos with $500,000 in cash, is consulting with the Lao government on the aid channel.

3. The ROK government expects that the work of the KDRT in Laos as well as the relief supplies to be provided to the country will help to console Laotians suffering from the dam accident, to restore stability in their lives, and to recover from damage as soon as possible.
