1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold the Korea-Africa Energy Cooperation Seminar at the Seoul Dragon City hotel (Grand Ballroom on the third floor) on July 11.

o The seminar will bring together about 130 people, including energy experts from four African countries (Tanzania, Algeria, Gabon, and Nigeria) and the African Development Bank, as well as representatives from energy-related organizations, private companies, and academia in the ROK and abroad.

2. The seminar will begin with opening remarks by Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Yun Kang-hyeon; congratulatory remarks by Vice Chairman of the National Assembly's Forum for a New Era with Africa Sul Hoon, and Chair of the Korea-Africa Foundation Choi Yeon-ho; and keynote remarks by Manager of the Renewable Energy Division Engeda Negash at the African Development Bank. After the remarks, participants will explain the current state of Africa’s electricity, and new and renewable energy development, as well as related projects, and discuss ways to cooperate with the ROK.

o The seminar will feature presentations by Assistant Commissioner for Energy Development Juma F. Mkobya at the Ministry of Energy and Minerals of Tanzania on “Tanzania’s development of new and renewable energy and electricity, and ways to work together”; Director of the Renewable Energy Development Center of Algeria Noureddine Yassaa on the “current state and prospects for Algeria’s new and renewable energy development”; vice head of the electricity bureau Jacques Amalet at the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Gabon on “Gabon’s electricity infrastructure, and ways to work together”; and director A.D. Abubakar at the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing of Nigeria on “Nigeria’s new and renewable energy, and electricity, and ways to work together.” After the presentations, participants will look at the possibility of Korean companies making inroads into the electricity, and new and renewable energy market in Africa.

o Righter after the end of the seminar, the speakers will visit Hanam Union Park and Tower in Hanam City, and make a tour of environmental facilities, including waste disposal and sewage treatment facilities.

3. On July 12, the day after the seminar, the Foreign Ministry will arrange one-on-one meetings between the speakers and Korean businessmen to introduce Korean companies to countries where they wish to increase presence, and to provide an opportunity to discuss the possibility of Korean companies participating in projects in the African countries.

o About 20 Korean companies in the energy sector will participate in one-on-one meetings.

4. The Foreign Ministry hopes that the upcoming seminar will become a meaningful opportunity to help participants better understand the African energy market, which is receiving increasing attention, as well as each country’s energy business environment, and to facilitate Korean companies’ entry into the energy market in Africa.
