1. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha spoke by phone with Foreign Minister of Canada Chrystia Freeland on July 6. The two sides exchanged views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, and discussed ways to increase cooperation between the two countries.

Meetings between the ROK and Canadian Foreign Ministers held this year: meetings on the sidelines of the Vancouver Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Security and Stability on the Korean Peninsula (January 16), and the UN Human Rights Council meeting (February 27), and during Minister Freeland’s visit to the ROK (March 29)

2. Minister Kang said that discussions to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establish a peace regime on the Peninsula were underway based on close collaboration between the ROK and the US, and especially inter-Korean meetings in a range of areas, including military affairs, sports, and humanitarianism, had been and would be held. She also said that the ROK would continue to communicate with the international community, including Canada, during the process.

Canada, as president of the G7 this year, is seen as one of the countries leading international discussions on the Korean Peninsula.

o Minister Freeland spoke highly of the latest progress in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and the ROK government’s leading roles, and said that Canada would continue to actively support the ROK government’s efforts to resolve issues on the Korean Peninsula peacefully.

3. Furthermore, the two sides agreed to further expand cooperation on the global stage between the ROK and Canada, like-minded countries which share the values of free trade, the rule of law, and human rights.
