Foreign Ministry to Discuss Public Diplomacy Strategy on Jeju, Island of Peace, to Foster Unity and Closer Ties among ROK, China and Japan

1. Ambassador for Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Park Enna will chair a session titled “Vision and Strategy of Public Diplomacy for Peace and Prosperity in Northeast Asia” to be held during the 13th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity at the International Convention Center Jeju on June 26.

The session will bring together experts in public diplomacy from home and abroad, including Upper House lawmaker Rui Matsukawa of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, Director of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy Jay Wang, Professor Nancy Snow at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, President of the Corea Image Communication Institute Choi Jung-hwa, Professor Kadir Ayhan at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Professor Kim Tae-hwan at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, and Professor Robert Kelly at Pusan National University.

 

o In the session, the participants will look at examples of public diplomacy in major Northeast Asian countries, including the ROK, China and Japan, and discuss the direction and strategy of the ROK’s public diplomacy. They will also discuss ways to contribute to peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia and the world through public diplomacy.

 

3. On the sidelines of the forum, Ambassador Park Enna will conduct an interview with Upper House lawmaker Rui Matsukawa of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, and Director of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy Jay Wang, and engage in in-depth discussions on public diplomacy strategies of Japan and the US, and the way forward for the ROK’s public diplomacy.

 

o The interview, which will be aired as part of Arirang TV’s special programs, is expected to serve as an opportunity to look into the perception of opinion leaders in major countries about the establishment of a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. In particular, the interviewees will make their assessments of the inter-Korean and US-North Korea summits, and exchange views on ways to garner international support for peace on the Korean Peninsula, strategies for public diplomacy through new media, and the role of public diplomacy in improving the ROK-Japan and ROK-US relations.
