ROK to Attend UN High-Level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States

1. A Republic of Korea delegation led by Moon Young-ki, head of the National Counterterrorism Center under the Office for Government Policy Coordination, will attend a UN High-level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States to take place at the UN headquarters, New York, on June 28 and 29.

 

° At the first-ever UN high-level meeting on counter-terrorism, the ROK delegation will share with the other participants the country’s efforts to prevent terrorism-inciting violent extremism; and will take part in the discussions on specific ways to step up international cooperation on counter-terrorism.

 

The main topic to be covered at the Conference is “ways to strengthen international cooperation to combat the evolving global terrorism threat.” Its subtopics are sharing information, expertise and resources in a bid to step up international cooperation; ways to respond to evolving threats from foreign terrorist fighters; ways to beef up international cooperation to prevent violent extremism; and expanding the UN’s role in the field and its capacity to support member states’ efforts to implement its global counter-terrorism strategies.

 

2. The ROK delegation will also attend the side event themed “international cooperation to prevent the abuse of the Internet for terrorism purposes,” which the ROK, the UAE and Singapore will co-host. It will publicize the project jointly conducted by the ROK and the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) -- Asia ICT (information and communications technology) & Counter-terrorism Dialogue.

 

3. On the sidelines of the High-Level Conference, the ROK delegation will meet bilaterally with Under-Secretary-General Voronkov of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (OCT), during which the two sides will explore ways that the ROK and the UN can reinforce partnership on counter-terrorism.
