1. At the formal meeting of the UN Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) held at the UN headquarters, New York, on June 12, local time, the Republic of Korea’s former Ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway Park Hae-yun was elected to chair the 58th CPC session from June 4 till 29, 2018, becoming the first Korean delegate to be elected to the post.

The UN CPC is a standing subsidiary organ of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that sets project plans to be implemented with the UN budget and reviews the progress in those projects. The body elects 34 members every three years from each regional group. The ROK has been working on the CPC continuously since 1999.

2. Former Ambassador Park has abundant experiences and expertise in the field of UN administration and budget affairs, as can be seen from his service as Vice-Chair of the Administrative and Budgetary, or the Fifth, Committee of the UN General Assembly during its 55th session in 2000 and as a member of the UN Committee on Contributions (COC) from 2000 till 2011. As CPC Chair, former Ambassador Park is expected to help the ROK make more contributions in the field.

The UN COC, a standing subsidiary body of the General Assembly that offers the General Assembly advice on the apportionment of UN expenses among Member States, is composed of 18 three-year-term experts. The ROK has been working on the COC continuously since 2000.

3. The ROK is a major financial contributor to the UN, as can be seen from the fact it is the 13th- largest contributor to the UN regular budget and the 12th to the UN peacekeeping operations (PKO) budget. Going forward, the country will continue to take an active part in discussions on the UN’s administrative and budgetary policies and plans.

The ROK’s contributions to the UN’s regular and PKO budgets in 2016-2018 -- approximately an annual $220 mln in total -- accounted for 2.039% of the respective total budgets.
