1. On June 8, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs Lee Do-hoon met with senior diplomats from Singapore and the nine other member states of ASEAN to the Republic of Korea. In the meeting, the Special Representative shared with the diplomats the outcome of the recent inter-Korean summit talks and the current situation on the Korean Peninsula; and exchanged views with them on ways that the ROK and ASEAN can work together toward the success of the US-North Korea summit meeting slated for the next week.

° Sixteen diplomats, including seven Ambassadors, acting Ambassadors and three deputy mission chiefs, from the ten member states of ASEAN attended the meeting.

2. Special Representative Lee spoke of the ROK government’s plan to faithfully, as well as with the support of and in cooperation with the international community, implement the measures agreed upon by the leaders of the ROK and North Korea, stressing that it will work hard to make a success of the US-North Korea summit talks and thereby to achieve a complete denuclearization and a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

° He extended appreciation to Singapore, the ASEAN chair for the year 2018, for its active role in the relevant efforts, including through assistance regarding the forthcoming US-North Korea summit talks, as well as to the other ASEAN countries for their support for the outcome of the inter-Korean summit talks and other contributions to peace on the Korean Peninsula. He went on to ask ASEAN to remain highly cooperative with the ROK in that regard.

3. The senior diplomats from the ASEAN countries, expressing gratitude to the Special Representative for his briefing, mentioned that ASEAN strongly supports the ROK government’s efforts toward the denuclearization and a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and thus will continue to render cooperation to the ROK as necessary to that end.
