1. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha spoke by phone with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on June 1 at the request of the EU side, and exchanged views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula, and ways to step up cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the EU.

2. Minister Kang explained the situation on the Korean Peninsula, including the recent developments regarding efforts to revive the US-North Korea summit, and took note that the EU has actively supported the ROK’s North Korea policy. Minister Kang also asked for the EU’s continued interest and support to keep alive the current momentum for dialogue in order to achieve complete denuclearization and establish a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

3. High Representative Mogherini took note of the ROK government’s efforts to improve inter-Korean relations, denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, and establish peace on the Peninsula, and said that the EU will continue to fully support the ROK side’s such efforts, and play necessary roles.

4. High Representative Mogherini explained developments in the EU regarding the latest US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and said that the EU will continue to closely work together with the international community, including Iran, to keep the Iran nuclear deal alive, and to ensure that the restoration of US sanctions on Iran does not have a negative effect on EU companies.

5. The two sides noted that the ROK and the EU, which mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year, are maintaining close and friendly cooperative relations in a range of areas, including political, economic and cultural affairs, and agreed to work to make more tangible progress in cooperation between the two sides by continuing robust high-level exchanges.
