Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs Yun Kang-hyeon to Attend 74th Session of UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific

1. Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Yun Kang-hyeon will lead a delegation of the Republic of Korea to the ministerial segment (May 14-16) of the 74th session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 11 to 16.

 

o Prior to the ministerial segment, the senior officials segment will take place from May 11 to 12.

 

The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), one of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)’s five regional commissions, is the largest intergovernmental organization in the region (62 member states) which plays a central role in economic and social cooperation in Asia and the Pacific.

 

2. In the upcoming session, to be held under the theme “Inequality in the era of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” participants will discuss ways to address growing inequality in the Asia-Pacific region, and to step up cooperation among countries in the region.

 

3. In his address to the session, Deputy Minister Yun will stress the importance of easing inequality to lay the foundation for achieving political and economic stability, and inclusive growth in the region. He will also underline the importance of science and technology in solving inequality problems, as well as the need to strengthen science and technology education, and propose ways to increase regional cooperation to promote sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific, including enhancing public-private partnerships.
