1. The foreign ministers from the five member states of MIKTA -- Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia -- adopted on April 30 a joint statement in congratulation of the success of the 2018 inter-Korean summit talks held the week before.

* MIKTA is a cooperative mechanism among the aforementioned middle power countries launched on September 25, 2013, during the 68th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

° In the statement, the foreign ministers welcomed “the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit successfully held at the Peace House in the southern part of Panmunjom, Korea, on April 27,” calling the summit “a great opportunity to lay stepping stones towards complete denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, as well as progress in inter-Korean relations.”

° The foreign ministers expressed “hope that the Inter-Korean Summit will also serve as a guide for the success of the following US-North Korea Summit.”

° They also expressed “aspiration that the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit and the US-North Korea Summit will turn out to be milestones for the peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.”

2. The MIKTA countries have presented to the international community their shared views on such major global issues as development, human rights and terrorism response. On March 17, they adopted a joint foreign ministerial statement in congratulation of the success of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Going forward, the ROK government will seek to further step up MIKTA cooperation in a bid for the body to become an influential consultative mechanism of middle power countries in the international community.
