Foreign Minister Holds Telephone Conversation with her US Counterpart

1. On April 28, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha held her first telephone conversation with new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the US, who was then on a visit to Brussels.  

 

2. Minister Kang started out by offering congratulations to Secretary Pompeo on his inauguration, expressing pleasure over the fact that amid the keen attention of the global community to the Korean Peninsula, she will be working with the Secretary who has been personally handling North Korean issues.

 

° Secretary Pompeo, extending appreciation to the Minister in response, mentioned that although he was on his first business trip since his inauguration, the significance of Korean Peninsula issues prompted him to place a priority on holding the telephone conversation with the Minister and suggested that they work closely together down the road.

 

3. Minister Kang shared with her US counterpart the major results of the recent inter-Korean summit talks, including the affirmed commitment to a complete denuclearization, adding that one of the most significant characteristics of the summit meeting was the candid and extensive dialogue between the Republic of Korea and North Korean leaders.

 

° The Minister stressed that the ROK and the US should concentrate on using their diplomatic capability for the positive outcome of the inter-Korean summit talks to lead to the success of the forthcoming US-North Korea summit meeting. The two sides discussed the possibility of holding an ROK-US summit meeting at an early, mutually convenient time to that end.

 

4. Secretary Pompeo, calling encouraging the outcome of the inter-Korean summit talks, including with regard to the denuclearization issue, expressed strong willingness to work closely with the ROK to build on the outcome of the inter-Korean summit meeting in order to make a success of the US-North Korea summit talks and thereby achieve tangible progress toward the resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue.

 

5. The Minister and the Secretary drew a common understanding that it is important for the foreign affairs authorities of the ROK and the US to communicate and coordinately closely with each other; and agreed to meet with each other at an appropriate time after checking the timetable of key diplomatic events to be held between the two countries.
