Outcome of Meeting of ROK and US Top Negotiators at Six-Party Talks

1. Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs Lee Do-hoon met with US Special Representative for North Korea Policy Joseph Yun on February 5 for a meeting of the ROK and US top negotiators at the Six-Party Talks. They shared their assessments of the latest developments, including North Korea’s participation in the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, and discussed ways to respond to them based on strong collaboration between the ROK and the US.

 

2. The two sides agreed to continue to closely collaborate and cooperate to make sure that the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, which will kick off this week, will conclude successfully, becoming a real “peace Olympics.”

 

3. The two sides also discussed ways to ensure that the momentum for peace on the Korean Peninsula, created by the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, will lead to the resumption of dialogues to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue peacefully.

 

o Special Representative Lee shared the results of the latest meeting of the ROK and Russian top negotiators at the Six-Party Talks, held in Moscow on February 1. The two sides exchanged views on ways to work together with major countries, including China and Russia, to bring North Korea back to the table for meaningful dialogues over the North Korean nuclear issue.

 

4. The two sides agreed to continue close collaboration and consultations to induce North Korea to make the right choice, while maintaining the momentum for establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula even after the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, in order to achieve their common goal of solving the North Korean nuclear problem peacefully.
