1. Foreign Minister Augustine Mahiga of Tanzania will pay an official visit to the Republic of Korea from January 30 till February 2.

° During his visit to the ROK, Minister Mahiga will meet with the ROK Foreign Minister; attend the opening ceremony of the Tanzanian Embassy in the ROK; and hold a meeting with businesspeople.

The Minister’s forthcoming visit to the ROK will mark the second of its kind following his first in April 2017 to mark the 25th anniversary of the ROK-Tanzanian diplomatic relations.

The ROK and Tanzania established diplomatic relations in April 1992, with the ROK Embassy in Tanzania opened in October of the same year.

2. On January 31, Minister Kang Kyung-wha will meet with Minister Mahiga, during which the two top diplomats will exchange views on matters of mutual concern, including the progress in the ROK-Tanzania economic cooperation, development cooperation, and the situations on the Korean Peninsula and in Africa; and discuss ways that the two countries can further step up growing substantive bilateral cooperation in diverse sectors.

° Tanzania, in view of the ROK as a model for its economic development, has expressed hope to work more closely with the ROK across the board, including political affairs, economy and culture.

The ROK’s grants and loans to Tanzania from 1987 through 2016 stood at a combined 400 million US dollars.

- Among all of the recipient countries of the ROK’s assistance, Tanzania has received the ninth-largest volume of the ROK’s assistance as well as the largest in Africa.

3. Minister Mahiga’s official visit to the ROK, which will come after the one he made to mark the 25th anniversary of the ROK-Tanzania diplomatic relations, is expected to serve as an opportunity to continue the momentum of high-level exchanges; and to discuss in depth ways to work more closely together across the board, including trade and investment, Korean companies’ participation in infrastructure projects in Tanzania and coordination on the North Korean nuclear issue.

Recent high-level exchanges between the two countries

- The visits to Tanzania by Constitutional Court justice Kim Chang-jong in May 2017, a Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance in April 2017, and the Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs in Feburary 2017.

- The visits to the ROK by lawmaker Chumi in September 2017 and Foreign Minister Mahiga in April 2017.
