Outcome of Meeting of ROK and Japanese Top Negotiators at Six-Party Talks

1. Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs Lee Do-hoon met with Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau Kenji Kanasugi of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 8 for a meeting of the ROK and Japanese top negotiators at the Six-Party Talks.

 

2. The two sides agreed to step up diplomatic efforts to help the peace of momentum being created on the Korean Peninsula, including high-level inter-Korean talks on January 9 on North Korea’s participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, lead to a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue.

 

o To that end, the two sides discussed in depth ways to maintain close communications and cooperation, and manage the situation on the Korean Peninsula in a stable manner, and thereby bring North Korea to the table for meaningful talks.

 

3. The two sides agreed to continue to communicate more closely to achieve their common goal of solving the North Korean nuclear problem peacefully.
