8th ROK-China Counter-Terrorism Consultation to Take Place

1. The 8th Republic of Korea-China counter-terrorism consultation will be held in Beijing on November 30, with Director-General for International Organizations of the Foreign Ministry Lee Jang-keun and Director-General of the Department of External Security Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Liu Guangyuan leading their respective delegations.

o The upcoming consultation will be attended by officials from the Foreign Ministries and other relevant government agencies of the two countries.

2. The ROK and China have held counter-terrorism consultations every year since 2010 to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation. In the forthcoming consultation, the two sides will assess the current global and regional terrorism situations, share their countries’ major counter-terrorism policies, and discuss ways for the two countries to cooperate in preventing and responding to violent extremism, preventing the misuse of information and communication technology (ICT) by terrorist groups, and addressing the issue of foreign terrorist fighters.

o In the consultation, the ROK government will especially discuss ways to work together with China, the host country of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, to host a safe Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang next year.

3. The ROK government has held counter-terrorism consultations on a regular basis with major countries, including the US, Japan, China and Russia. Through such consultations, the government has discussed related information and policies, built networks between relevant agencies, and shared exemplary cases.

o This year, the ROK has held counter-terrorism consultations with the US (April 25) and Russia (October 19).
