1. The 6th ROK-Latin America seminar on public safety cooperation, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, will take place at Four Seasons Hotel Seoul at 2 p.m. on October 12.

o The upcoming seminar will be attended by top-level officials of immigration authorities of six Latin American countries, including the Minister of Interior and the heads of immigration authorities, as well as about 100 people from the ROK side, including Director-General for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Huh Tae-wan, and Commissioner of the Korea Immigration Service of the Ministry of Justice Cha Gyu-geun.

2. In a bid to support Latin America’s efforts to resolve public safety problems, one of the key issues facing the region, the ROK government, in cooperation with relevant government agencies, has held the ROK-Latin America seminar on public safety cooperation since 2012 to discuss cooperation in the police, correction and prosecution fields.

3. At the seminar, the two sides will discuss concrete ways to enhance cooperation in the field of immigration between the ROK and Latin America, considering the fact that Latin American countries are showing keen interest in the use of information and communication technology in immigration control, as well as projects to modernize immigration systems, making them a priority in the public safety area.

o In particular, the ROK Ministry of Justice will make presentations under the themes “ROK’s immigration screening system for an effective border control” and “ROK’s foreign residents management system,” and have the opportunity to introduce the ROK’s advanced immigration system to Latin American countries and share its experience.

4. The forthcoming seminar will serve as an opportunity to strengthen networks for cooperation between the ROK and Latin American immigration authorities, and to publicly express the ROK government’s willingness to support Latin America’s efforts to improve public safety. The seminar is also expected to raise Latin American countries’ awareness of the ROK’s advanced immigration system, and lay the foundation for the countries’ introduction of the system.
