1. The government of the Republic of Korea will provide one million US dollars in humanitarian assistance to Mexico, which sustained massive damage from the earthquake on September 19.

° So far, the 7.1-magnitude earthquake is known to have caused a considerable loss of human life and property damage, leaving 338 dead, some 800 injured, 40-odd buildings destroyed and some 14,500 buildings damaged. In particular, the capital of Mexico City has suffered the largest portion of the damage, including 199 deaths.

2. The ROK government’s humanitarian assistance is expected to help people of Mexico, who have been suffering from damage caused by a series of natural disasters, -- the 8.2-magnitude earthquake on September 7, Hurricane Katia on September 8 and another earthquake on September 19 -- with their efforts to restore stability in their lives as well as with the recovery work in the affected areas.

° In his keynote speech at the UN General Assembly session on September 21, President Moon Jae-in, on behalf of the ROK people and government, extended sympathy to the Mexican people over their damage from the earthquakes.

3. Going forward, the government of the ROK, a responsible middle power country of the international community, will increase humanitarian assistance to countries and peoples affected by natural disasters in a bid to join their efforts to overcome damage.
