Foreign Minister Meets with Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova

1. Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha met with Director-General of UNESCO Irina Georgieva Bokova on September 22, and discussed the cooperative relations between the Republic of Korea and UNESCO, and the way forward for UNESCO.

2. Minister Kang said that UNESCO is the ROK’s important partner, and since the ROK’s accession to UNESCO in 1950, the relations between the two sides have significantly developed, and hoped that the two sides will continue to strengthen cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture.

3. Minister Kang stressed the importance of UNCESO as a specialized agency of the UN which upholds universal values, including human rights, and asked for interest to ensure that the commitments individual countries had made to UNESCO are delivered on properly.

4, Director-General Bokova agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation between the ROK and UNESCO, and said that UNESCO will continue to play its roles as a neutral and specialized international agency.
