1. The government of the Republic of Korea will provide humanitarian aid worth US$200,000 to Nepal, which has suffered massive damage from floods and landslides caused by heavy rains since August 11.

o The recent heavy rains, the worst in 15 years in Nepal, affected 35 of the 75 districts in Nepal. The rains are known to have caused significant loss of human life and property damage, leaving 131 people dead, 32 missing, about 9,850 houses destroyed, and about 301,500 households affected.

2. The humanitarian aid from the ROK is expected to contribute to restoring affected areas and stabilizing the lives of the Nepali people, who are experiencing difficulties due to the natural disasters that occurred once again when restoration and reconstruction works underway since the large earthquake in April 2015 had not been fully completed.

o When Nepal was struck by the earthquake in 2015, the ROK government sent the Korea Disaster Relief Team to assist in rescue efforts, and joined Nepal’s recovery efforts by donating relief money and supplies worth 1 million US dollars.

3. The government of the ROK, as a responsible middle-power country of the international community, will continue to expand humanitarian diplomacy aimed to support the recovery efforts of natural disaster-affected countries and people.
