Foreign Ministry Concludes Cooperation Agreement with PyeongChang Organizing Committee for 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

1. On July 27, the Foreign Ministry, together with the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG), concluded an agreement calling for joint efforts to make a success of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. At the signing ceremony held at the Foreign Ministry on July 27, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and President and CEO of the POCOG Lee Hee-beom signed the agreement and agreed to seek close cooperation between their two agencies. On the heels of the ceremony, Minister Kang held a meeting with POCOG President Lee, during which the two ranking officials discussed ways for comprehensive cooperation.

° Pursuant to the agreement, the Foreign Ministry and the POCOG will work closely together to make a success of the PyeongChang event. Specifically, the two sides will cooperate with each other in promotional activities, protocols and various other relevant fields, and will form and run a working-level consultative group if necessary. Going forward, the two sides are expected to coordinate closely with each other to map out specific ways for cooperation and enhance their cooperative ties.

2. Minister Kang mentioned that “The Republic of Korea being a supporter for principles of human rights and humanitarianism, it is important that it seek to make a success of not only the Olympic Games but also the Paralympics.”

3. Having concluded a cooperation agreement with the POCOG, the Foreign Ministry will carry out promotional activities overseas with its 182 overseas missions as outposts for the activities, and will set up protocols for foreign leaders who will visit the ROK during the PyeongChang event.
