Foreign Ministry Hosts an Interagency Meeting Regarding the Terrorist Attack in Nice, France

1. The Foreign Ministry hosted an interagency meeting on July 15 to seek ways to protect Koreans in France in the wake of the terrorist attack in Nice, France. The meeting, chaired by Ambassador for Overseas Koreans and Consular Affairs Han Dong-man, brought together officials from such relevant government agencies as the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae and the National Counterterrorism Center at the Office for Government Policy Coordination.

2. In his opening remarks at the meeting, Ambassador Han condemned the terrorist attack that had claimed lives of many innocent people; brought attention to the fact that the attack was committed during a Bastille Day celebration after the closing of Euro 2016 in France; and asked the Foreign Ministry and the Embassy in France to continue efforts to check whether any nationals of the Republic of Korea had sustained damage or injuries from the terrorist attack.

° The Embassy in France is checking whether any ROK nationals have sustained damage or injuries. So far, no ROK national has been confirmed to have done so.

3. At the interagency meeting, the ROK government decided to stand ready to send a rapid response team and take other necessary measures should any ROK national happen to have sustained damage or injuries; and text relevant notices and distribute safety information on-line and off-line to ensure the safety of the ROK nationals in the summer vacation season.

° The Foreign Ministry is also considering raising the Travel-alert Level for Nice from Level 1 (Precautious) to Level 2 (Highly Cautious).

4. The Foreign Ministry sent a consul and another staff member of the Embassy in France to Nice on July 15, local time, who, upon their arrival in Nice, will meet with local authorities and visit hospitals where the dead and the injured have been sent to in order to check whether any ROK national has sustained damage or injuries.
