1. The foreign ministers of the member countries of MIKTA, a consultative mechanism among the five middle power countries of the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey and Australia, issued a joint statement on February 17 expressing support for the UN Secretary-General’s “Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism” and UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/70/254, which had been adopted to welcome the plan.

2. The joint statement commended the UN General Assembly for adopting a resolution to express the resolve of the international community to address the scourge of violent extremism; affirmed that as “violent extremism cannot and should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group” and “its horrific impacts reach across the globe, including to MIKTA countries,” “only through concerted action at the global, regional and national level, and through fulfilling obligations under international law” can this issue be resolved; and stated that the MIKTA countries will play a constructive role in countering violent extremism.

3. By issuing the foreign ministers’ joint statement on the “Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism,” which marks its eighth joint statement, MIKTA is seen to have reaffirmed its value as a consultative mechanism among middle power countries that seeks peace and prosperity of the international community.
