1. Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, Mr. Hwang Joon-kook will visit Shanghai and Beijing from July 19 to 24 to deepen and expand strategic communications with China on North Korea and its nuclear issue. The Special Representative will meet various experts, including those at prominent research institutes and universities, and exchange views on China’s foreign policy and issues regarding the Korean Peninsula. He will also meet with Chinese Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs, Ambassador Wu Dawei.

2. As it is all the more necessary to closely consult and deliberate on the North Korean nuclear issue with China, given North Korea’s rejection of dialogue on its nuclear program, the latest freeze in the China-North Korea relations, and the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program reached recently, Mr. Hwang will meet Chinese opinion leaders from think-tanks, academe and the media, who are increasingly expanding influence over China’s foreign policy. Through the meetings, he intends to deepen and expand strategic communications between the ROK and the PRC by explaining our position on the North Korean nuclear issue and the North Korean problem and by listening to various voices from Chinese experts.

3. At the same time, Mr. Hwang will also meet with Ambassador Wu Dawei, China’s chief negotiator for the Six-Party Talks. They will have in-depth discussions on the recent changes in the situation and ways to respond jointly to the North Korean nuclear issue.
