Outcome of an ROK-Mekong SOM

1. A Republic of Korea-Mekong Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, on July 15 and 16, bringing together delegates from the ROK and the five countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion. Director-General for South Asian and Pacific Affairs Kang Young-hoon of the Foreign Ministry attended the meeting as the ROK’s head delegate.

* The five countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

2. In the SOM, the delegates from the six countries discussed the full range of matters related to ROK-Mekong cooperation, including the progress in the implementation of the 2014-2017 ROK-Mekong Plan of Action and ways to enhance efficiency in the operation of the ROK-Mekong Cooperation Fund. Furthermore, the ROK and the Mekong countries laid the groundwork for the success of the fifth ROK-Mekong Foreign Ministers’ meeting set to take place as part of the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ meetings in early August 2015 and resolved to work together to deepen cooperation and actively explore potential cooperation projects.
