ROK and the US to Hold their 2015 Disarmament and Nonproliferation Consultation

1. The Republic of Korea-United States Disarmament and Nonproliferation Consultation for the year 2015 will take place at the Foreign Ministry, Seoul, on January 30, with Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs Shin Dong-ik of the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs and US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller leading their respective delegations.

◦ The two countries have held the high-level Disarmament and Nonproliferation Consultation on a regular basis since 2013 to step up cooperation on disarmament and nonproliferation policies and global security issues, and have worked closely together in the field.

2. In the upcoming meeting, the two sides will discuss key relevant matters, including the North Korean and Iranian nuclear issues in terms of the international regime for disarmament and nonproliferation; review conferences for the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT); the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); the Nuclear Security Summit; and the arms export control regime. The two countries, which are in comprehensive alliance that is evolving into global partnership, will also consult on various global issues, including cyber and outer space as well as bio-security.

3. On the sidelines of the meeting, Under Secretary Gottemoeller will make a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se and hold a meeting with Second Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul. On the occasions, the two sides will exchange views on matters of mutual concern.
