1. The ROK government developed its National Action Plan (NAP) for a systematic and effective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and submitted the NAP to the UN.

2. The ROK’s NAP sets out a total of ten goals in four areas – prevention, participation, protection, and relief and recovery - and concrete tasks to meet each goal. The NAP is focusing on: providing training before sending peacekeeping forces; establishing a system to prevent sexual violence through international cooperation; applying a gender-sensitive perspective in defense, foreign and unification polices; and protecting women in areas of armed conflict and helping them support themselves through development aid.

3. To submit its NAP, the ROK government formed a public-private consultative body, composed of relevant government agencies and civil society representatives, in August, 2013, based on a draft prepared following meetings with civic groups in early 2013. The government gathered the opinions of civil society through the body.

4. The ROK government’s development and submission to the UN of its NAP reaffirmed and let the world know the country’s willingness to increase women’s participation in resolving conflicts and establishing peace and to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. The ROK government will continue to review the implementation of the NAP through meetings among relevant government agencies and closely consult with civil society.
