New Ambassadors-at-large Appointed

1. The government of the Republic of Korea has appointed Min Dong-pil, a member of the International Science and Business Belt (ISSB) Team, as Ambassador-at-large for Scientific and Technical Cooperation; and Hwang Su-kwan, a clinical professor at Yonsei University Medical School, as Ambassador-at-large for Public Health and Medical Support for Developing Countries, in a bid to increase diplomatic activities in the science and technology sectors, and in the public health and medical sectors, respectively.

° Their term lasts one year from December 19, 2011, through December 18, 2012, extendable by one year if necessary.

2. Civilians or former government officials with expertise and prestige in various fields have been assigned to the post of ambassador-at-large, created to utilize their expertise, experience and human networks, to support the government’s diplomatic activities.

3. Mr. Min is expected to recruit outstanding scientific talent at home and from abroad and promote international cooperation in constructing heavy ion accelerators. Meanwhile, Professor Hwang is expected to work on increasing diplomatic activities in the public health and medical sectors in developing countries in a bid to help attain the Millennium Development Goals and eradicate poverty.
