Martin Donnelly, the UK’s Acting Head of Diplomatic Service, Visits Korea

1. Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan met with Martin Donnelly, the United Kingdom’s Acting Head of 
Diplomatic Service visiting Korea on an Asian tour, on July 14. During the meeting, the two sides 
exchanged views on the Cheonan incident; the importance of people-to-people exchange for the 
friendly and cooperative relationship between Korea and the UK; the Korea-EU FTA; the G20 Seoul 
Summit this November; and other matters of mutual concern.

2. Minister Yu, in particular, expressed gratitude for the UK’s dispatch of experts to the Joint Civilian-
Military Investigation Group for a probe into the Cheonan incident; the Foreign Secretary’s statement 
supporting the investigation results; and strong support in drawing up the UN Security Council 
Presidential Statement. Meanwhile, Acting Head Donnelly spoke of the UK government’s intention 
to continue cooperation and its role for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.

3. Acting Head Donnelly is scheduled to meet with 2nd Vice Minister Chun Yung-woo and Deputy 
Minister for Trade Ahn Ho-young later in the day to discuss ways for cooperation on international 
issues, including nuclear non-proliferation, human rights, the world economy, and the G20 Seoul 
Summit.
