The 51st General Conference of IAEA adopts Resolution on the North Korean Nuclear Issue

1. The 51st General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) which started on 
September 17 in Vienna, Austria adopted a resolution on the North Korean nuclear issue on September 
20. The main substance of the resolution is as follows:
o The IAEA welcomes the February 13 Agreement of the Six-party talks and the shutdown and sealing of 
nuclear facilities in Yongbyon
o The IAEA approves its activities of inspection and verification on the shutdown and sealing of the 
Yongbyon nuclear facilities
o The IAEA stresses the importance of the implementation of the September 19 Joint Declaration and the 
February 13 Agreement
o The IAEA expects North Korea to take additional measures of making a complete declaration of its 
nuclear programs and disabling its nuclear facilities
 
2. The resolution welcomed making headway in settling the North Korean nuclear issue by shutting down 
and sealing the North Korean nuclear facilities and resuming inspection and verification activities of the 
IAEA. In addition, the IAEA expected that there will be further progress towards the denuclearization of the 
Korean Peninsula at the earliest date by implementing next steps of declaring and disabling nuclear 
programs and facilities. It also stressed the importance of a peaceful resolution through the Six-party 
dialogue to the DPRK nuclear issue.
 
3. The IAEA General Conference has adopted resolutions on the North Korean nuclear issue since 1999. 
The 61-member sponsored resolution during this General Conference shows the broad support of the 
international community for the progress of the Six-party process as well as for a peaceful resolution of 
the North Korean nuclear issue.
